Hazel (formerly know as Amy) was rescued at the tender age of seven months from a terrible backyard breeder. Unfortunately, because of bad breeding, she was born with congenital kidney disease, which caused her to continually leak urine. We brought her home from Dr. Kraemer’s in December... My husband and I could not bear such a sweet, young girl staying in the kennels one day longer. We trained her to wear doggie diapers and she acclimated to them very quickly. This girl is a champ!

Hazel had her non-functioning kidney removed in January. Our hopes were, by removing the bad kidney, her incontinence would be fixed. Unfortunately, the surgery did not work as we had hoped. But there is some good news!!! Although she still dribbles urine, it has greatly improved and we have made wonderful strides in potty training. We have her in a diaper when she is indoors, but take it off when she is in the backyard.

Sadly, the tests revealed her remaining kidney is also abnormal and functioning at less than 50%. As of now, Hazel shows absolutely no signs of distress. She is your typical, almost one year old, puppy. She adores her two furry foster brothers and loves to snuggle in bed with her 14-year old human brother. She also loves chew toys and sunning herself, diaperless, in our backyard grass. She does well on walks, although is still a bit skittish of unknown noises and shadows. With some coaxing she usually finds her courage. One of her FAVORITE things is car rides; in your passenger seat or on your lap. She curls right up and and falls fast asleep in the front seat of my car. My husband’s truck has a bench seat and Hazel loves laying her head on his lap while he drives. She has made trips to Lowe’s, Home Depot, PetCo. and to our second home in Lake Havasu City.

A specialist confirmed what we were hoping not to hear. Her life expectancy is 3-4 years, and most likely will be closer to the three-year mark. Hazel is the most perfect, cutest, sweetest cuddle bug of a dog and deserves to have a permanent home to live out the rest of her years. She is the ultimate family dog who loves everyone and everything.

Hazel will be required to be on a prescription kidney diet and have blood/urine tests every 4-6 months to monitor her health. She has chronic urinary tract infections, due to her kidney disease, which require antibiotics. She also has several other medications to help support her kidneys. Hazel has developed a cherry eye, which is managed with an eye ointment. She is not a candidate for surgery due to her poor kidney health. However, the cherry eye does not seem to bother her in the least.

As her foster mommy, my hope is to make sure Hazel has the most perfect furever family to love her and spoil her rotten…she deserves it!
