Don't they usually artificially inseminate Bully's? I will get others here with experience. desertskybulldogs. Davidh... Sherry

Cecil County MD? hell you are CLOSE to me !

my 1st question is.

Why do you want to breed your bullies ? (you need to answer this honestly)
If its not 'to improve the breed' then please dont attempt.

I'm not a breeder, but I do know that

1) MOST bullies need to be Artificially Inseminated - are you up to 'collecting' the seed of your Male?

2) MOST Bullies need to have a C-Section to give birth. Are you financially situation for that surgery cost when you might not have any puppies survive?

Just curious, since you are so close to me, who is your Vet ? I can make a GREAT Recommendation for a Vet in Middletown DE which is very close to Cecil County MD, who is a bully specialist.

Unfortunately some people see 'Bulldogs' and see the price of bulldog puppies and see $$$$ for breeding - we call them Back Yard Breeders

Finally just because they are AKC, doesnt mean they are of good health or temperament. Have you had your pups Certified for their Hips? Do they have any eye, Tail, or allergy issues ? I could ask so many more questions, and they are educated questions from reading this site :)

I think doing more research is very important before you attempt breeding, as it is a very long process. I am assuming more research is needed on your part because yes, they should usually be artificially inseminated. They can easily overheat resulting in death if you try to have them do it naturally. Please read our article on breeding and research more, talk to your vet, and find a breeder who is willing to be your mentor.

Sorry, really do not want to offend anyone, but serioulsy, the world does not need any more dogs, especially from inexperienced backyard breeders. See rescue section for the THOUSANDS of dogs needing homes.

We bred our dog Bella, and first of all I would like to say that I was NOT on board w/this decision... this was my hubby's great "idea". I had NO idea all that was involved, and even though I did as much research as I could, you do not realize the time & money involved in this process. We did have her inseminated & she got a C-section, but ultimately we had to have the runt put to sleep because of severe hydrocephalus & spinal issues (NOT something I was prepared to deal with) and then we just lost Bella a month ago during her spay due to C-section complications. If I had the chance to go back in time I would of NEVER done this... I can't begin to tell you the tears we have shed in the past couple of months. We are NOT breeders, and what my hubby thought would be a neat experience ended up in heartache. I would also like to mention that before I got on this forum I had NO idea the amount of bully's that were in rescue's. It amazes me that people will spend thousands of dollars on a dog to then put it in a rescue because of medical or financial issues. PLEASE don't think I'm judging you... we thought it would be a fun experience too, but I wish I had found this forum before we began. I have learned SO much about bully's on here... I just wish that someone had told me the REAL truth of what could happen so we could of made a well informed decision

I agree that you might want to reconsider breeding. Are you willing to possibly lose the mama and/or babies? With this breed that is a very real concern. Def. need to read up on breeding before you proceed.

I don't know a whole lot about breeding bullies, but I do know it is extremely tricky so please make sure you do your research and are well informed and have excellent help before doing it!

Actually just watched a show last night where a lady bred her pug (similiar brachysyphalic (sp?) and body shape). The momma dog died a few weeks after due to uterus complications, sad... But one interesting thing I learned was since the momma dog was under anestesia (as would a bully) in the first critical time right after birth, she did not bond with the babies (it seems she did not realize they were even hers) so the human had to bottle feed the pups every 2 hours for weeks. That would be quite exhausting.

Do more home work before breeding. Breeding should only be done to try and better the breed, with studying the pedigrees of both bullies to make sure you will have the best, healthy, and great temperaments you can, That being said, they need to be artificially inseminated, as Lisa has said you take a change on the male overheating and dying. The female will have to have her pups by C-session. Bully pup's head and shoulders are too big and it is very hard on the mama, and if you have a water pup, that one will get stuck and the mama and the rest of the pups behind it will die. Even when you do everything right you still take a chance on loosing mama and all the pups, or just pups. You have to be up every two hours feeding the pups for the first 10 days then every 3 to 4 hours after that for a few more weeks, because you CAN NOT leave mama with the pups when they are not eating. Sometimes mama will not produce enough milk for the pups and you will have to bottle feed them. People thing it's an easy thing to just through two together and let nature take it's coarse, but that's not the case with bullies. Plus read the articles about breeding and raising pups here on the forum, before you make up your mind. If you still want to do it then we are here to help any way we can.

I think I saw that same show last night too, terribly sad :(!!!
