Just wanted to put this out there to hopefully keep what happened to us from happening to any of you. We purchased a Pup from some Breeders here in Charlotte, NC. We did a fair amount of research and thought them to be competent breeders. Normally I wouldnt take to the internet to blast someone, but the way we were treated and things we were accused of just left me astonished. Story goes like this..... We got Theo in March of 2012. Got to play with the parents before we took him home and everything looked to be on the up and up. We took Theo home and life was great (minus the peeing in the floor... lol) Well 6 months later we noticed there was blood in his urine and took him to the vet. Long story short, our vet couldnt figure out what was wrong and we made a fast trip to the emergency vet. Come to find out he had a congenitive defect and his body did not produce the enzymes needed to break down the urate acid that produce bladder stones. At this point the vet left us with 2 options while they had to cath him to relieve his bladder. Option 1 Surgery to redirect his urethra to hopefully give a larger opening to hopefully pass the stones as this would be a lifelong ordeal. Or option 2 Put him down. Option 2 wan not an option. So within 2 days we spent over 10k dollars to try and save his life. Surgery went well and we kept to the required vet visits and the prescribed diet to try and keep this from happening again. Now according to our contract with the breeder we were entitled to return Theo and get a new pup since this was a congenitive defect. We didnt want that as it wouldnt be our Theo and did not contact the breeder. Flash forward to 2 weeks ago and we are right back to where we started, but much worse. He was in so much pain. we went back to the emergency vet that friday night to have ultrasound and to have his bladder relieved again. It was so bad that when they cath'd him it was like sand coming out due to all the stones. That's not the worst of it. The bladder stone that was blocking his urethra was larger than a quarter. At this point the vet said what we knew would probably be coming. He was in too much pain and recommended he be put down. We were devastated. We wouldve spent every last cent we had to take care of him. But the vet said he would live in pain and wouldnt be fair to him, so with heavy hearts we signed the documentation. Noting like watching a 6'4" man blubbering like a baby. Y wife was and is still devasatted. We then contacted the breeder to inform them of what we found out and that it was a congenitive defect. We didnt want anything from them, not money, nor a new pup. Just wanted them to know that there was an issue in the bloodline. The response I got totally left me in awe. I was basically told that apparently I had him put down because we couldnt afford him. And that there was no way it was a problem with their dogs. Ive never seen such a case of denial. I have confirmation from 2 different Dr's and have the documentation to prove exactly what it was. like I said before, I am not a vindictive person, but I refuse to sit back and let someone else have to go through what my family did. So please tell anyone who may bring up this name to please stay away. I wouldnt wish this heartache on my worst enemy. Im sorry for the blasting, but I had to vent to someone. Thank you for listening!

Oh, I'm so sorry you and your husband had to go through this, and for your loss of Theo. How devastating and sad for you to have to make this horrible decision. You did everything you could have to try and get him better, and in the end did the best thing you could for him, to alleviate his pain and suffering. It couldn't have been easy, I would have been heart broken. That breeder is just trying to place blame on you to absolve themselves of any guilt, or to admit there is a genetic problem in their bloodline. I'm sure if its genetic, then it probably isn't the first time this has happened to one of their puppies.

First off sending you and your family my Sincere Condolences…..

Second off, I can only imagine your family attachment being together for a year, through the hard times of puppyhood, through his medical problems and ultimately to being there for him as he passed.

Third off, There has to be more "WE" can do as a group, to stop the puppy breeders, puppy mills, the irresponsible people squeezing the life and money out of these pets to make their personal profit, other than talk about it, and scream it from the roof tops.

Fourth, If a family can afford to purchase the animal, how in the world could you accuse them of not being able to support the pets medical bills? especially after paying a $10,000.00 Dollar vet bill.

There has to be more that can be done to stop this……. Just Saying…….. There has to be more that can be done to protect the breed we all have and are pouring our love into. I wish I knew the answer, I'd gladly take the first step.

Oh this is terrible. I have to say while you aren't seeking anything , of I had vet records I would probably start litigation just for the sheer fact of their poor response to your situation. If I were the breeder, I would be. crying right with you and begging to speak with both vets. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

So sorry for your loss and that breeder has no business breeding pups if they don't want to hear about a problem with one of their pups. So sad.

Hey, I'm going to weigh in on this but before I do I'd like to say how sorry am I too for this terrible experience and above all, the loss of your baby bully. Tears :(

Bruno, our older bully was limping on an off after we bought him home. He was 6 months old when we welcomed him in to our home. We called the breeder and she said it was just the way "they walk". Having little experience with bully's at this stage, we put our minds at ease. Eventually this got worse so we decided to take him to a specialist vet. He had luxating patella surgery on his left hind leg at 8 months of age. Fast forward to 2012 November.....Bruno, out of know where, starting limping badly from the same side. This time we were told that he needed his hip replaced. We got the top vet in the business to do it and he seemed fine. Fast forward again to today.....he still limps from time to time. I have a horrible feeling its arthritis. We're taking him to two separate specialists tomorrow for their take on it.

In regards to the breeder, she not only gave us another puppy (Gidget) she also reimbursed us for Bruno. I will say however, that she said she would have put Bruno down had she have kept him! I was very shocked to hear this and thanked all the powers that be that we did have him in our care. Unfortunately, puppies to some breeders are purely a money making venture.

Again, I'm so sorry you have been through this.

" I will say however, that she said she would have put Bruno down had she have kept him!"

OHH HELL NO!!! Was this statement suppose to console you, Because it sure infuriated me.

The Lord works in mysterious ways, and OBVIOUSLY for Bruno, You were the Mysterious way!! His mother with wings…

In my honest opinion, A Baby farm, Puppy Mill, Backyard Novice breeder, is equivalent to a Jr. High Drop out in the workforce whom can't read and write, isn't willing to do the internship to learn, doesn't care about the blood lines or lineage, genetics, wanting professional wage for the shotty work!!!! How the heck does this work!!

The breeders that are out their, that follow the blood lines, lineage, genetics of their animals, that put out the guarantees for a healthy Bully Puppy, that loves and cares about the animals, That TELLS a potential owner, JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE MONEY doesn't mean you can own one of my puppies are to be put on a pedestal. The difference between a breeder that cares for this animal as a child, and one whom breeds for the prosperity is a world apart. I think anyone who has been burned once by a puppy farm/mill like I have, and others i've read about, Dang sure got it right the next go around. I've also read that even the best breeders out there have had an occasional puppy with problems, but they are too willing to get to the bottom of it, Solve the problem, make sure those two dogs never breed again, and go the extra hundred miles to make things right are to be commended.

I life close to Charlotte and feel like driving down and finding these jerks and have a serious intervention. Clearly theo was loved and well taken care of. A good breeder would have offered support to you and wanted to look back in the bloodlines history to find something to find a resolution.
So sorry for your loss

I am so sorry for your loss! Even when you try and research sometimes it is not enough. There are too many back yard breeders, that don't know or care what they are doing. Please file a complaint about, them.

I'm so sorry for your loss and what you have gone through.
Can I ask what kind of stones Theo had?
My older bully has had stones surgically removed and is affected by HUU gene that causes urate stones. Luckily he is doing great and has been stone/crystal free since the surgery.
