Single Puppy Litter

Hey, i was wondering if anyone knew anything about litters of puppys that have only 1 puppy. would this be a good thing or bad or would it matter at all?? i didnt know if there would their could be any health issues to a puppy being the only one or if would it be considered a good thing as it had and will recieve more nutrients and attention. also wondering about if its attitude or behavior could be affected having no sibblings or other puppies around. also wondering if the size of this full grown dog would be affected? just wondering if anybody had experienced this and what they have found. Not sure if I have the answers to this but the only concern I would think would be dog socialization, and making sure the pup has plenty of human interaction while young. Nutrients and such depend much on if nursing and what food they use once weened. In the womb yes it would be a benefit. Lots of room and all the nutrients given, provided the mother was fed properly. See a lot of it depends on how the owners care for the mom and pup essentially.

My Buddy was an only pup from our Lucy Lu. The only real problem that we had was her producing enough milk to feed him. One pup is not enough for mama to product enough milk before she starts drying up. We had to supplement him with formula and bottle feed him. He was socialized with our other bully and a beagle, plus we gave him plenty of attention. He has grown to a very handsome boy and no issues, health or other wise.

To add, I know of no known reason for the pup to be bigger because of being an only pup. It's in the genes and nutrition after birth. As far as canine social skills, it would be important after inoculations are completed. Many Play mates so to speak. A dog without any playmates may be aggressive to other dogs.

It's not unusual to have a litter of one puppy, called a singleton litter.....I've had one, but luckily a friend had a litter a few weeks before and he did get to join in on that litter. However, he was a big puppy but this really has nothing to do with being a singleton. Size is in the genetics. I have heard that there can be attitude issues but with the proper training, they should be socialized pretty well. I must say my Noki thinks he's the top dog, which doesn't sit well with his grandfather, but he's still a wonderful sweet boy and I just have to keep them separated most of the time.

One of my girls is a singleton....I kept a big fluffy teddy bear in with her....She thought of it as mom till she got older. I bottle fed her because there was no way for mom to produce enough milk and keep it flowing. She is a year old now and doing great!

While the "normal/common" number of puppies in a liter is about 4, as few as one or as many as....drum roll....12 can happen.
A single puppy has issues, many of which are mentioned here. Bigger liters also have issues as well. Knowing how to properly care for a puppy is very important. Thanks to all of you for your posts.

Part of being a breeder is the education towards others and to be "stewards" of the breed.
