  • Welcome Kona to Hospice Sponsorship!

"Hi! My name is Kona! I am only 5 weeks old (as of July 28th, 2014). I have a condition called atresia ani. This is a condition where I don't have an anus, and my colon stops short of where the anus should be. I hope you can sponsor me, because I am told I have a lot of changes coming in my life and it will be a long road ahead for me."

With Kona's condition, she is currently going poo out of her vagina, as her body has formed a diverticulum as a passageway from the colon to the vagina. She will need to have reconstructive surgery to create an anus (there is spot where it should be, but it isn't open), connect the colon to that new anus, and then close off the diverticulum. She is so small (4.5 lbs) and so young, that the surgeon wants to wait at least a month, if we can, to do the surgery so that she will better be able to handle the anesthesia and the surgery itself. The good news is, the surgeon feels she does have feeling and rectal reflexes, so although incontinence can be a risk, he is hoping for a good outcome.

Kona's foster mom Tami will be keeping in touch with EBN on her progress. Updates on her will be shared on the forum and the Hospice Sponsorship board. Kona is with SoCal Bulldog Rescue.

Kona's expenses are only beginning, monthly food, grooming supplies and care each month as well as her upcoming surgery, every little bit helps.

In December of 2010, English Bulldog News started a new sponsorship program for hospice English Bulldogs. These are the bulldogs that no one can or will adopt, due to their medical conditions or age, and have found their fur-ever homes in rescue, where they will be loved and cared for until they go to the rainbow bridge. Together as a community our goals is to pay for their food and prescriptions each month. In Kona's case, we are hoping that someday she will find a forever home, but she will be in rescue for a very long time before this can even be considered.

When you become a hospice sponsor, you will gain access to a special board in the forums for hospice sponsors, and you will receive the "Hospice Sponsorship" award to display in your award showcase within your user profile for each month you continue your subscription. You will also have a "Hospice Sponsor" badge that shows up in all of your posts. Your subscription donation will be automatically withdrawn out of your paypal account every 30 days until you cancel.

Update: Kona had her surgery and took her very first "real" poop! Her mommy Tami had never been so excited to see poop before!

Kona can now be sponsored directly with SoCal Bulldog Rescue, she will have many months of recovery ahead of her.
