Hi guys, Iíd like to introduce myself. My name is Henny, but you may know me as Cali Baker. Iíve been a member of EBN since February of this year and havenít looked back since!
I live in Pasadena, California, home of the Rose Bowl, Cal Tech, the Rose Parade, and me and my two bullies, Tate and Finn! Originally though, I was born in Indonesia, on the island of East Java (lotís of coffee there!), and in 1969, my parents packed up and moved us all to Los Angeles. I was only two years old at the time. The majority of my childhood was spent in the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park, and then in the late 1970ís, we moved to Orange County, CA.
I followed into the footsteps of my father who was a pharmacist and chemist, and became a pharmacist myself. I studied at the University of California, Irvine where I got a BS in biology, and then on to the University of California San Francisco for my doctorate in pharmacy. Iím a clinical pharmacist at the VA Outpatient Clinic in Los Angeles, and have been working there since 1995.
When Iím not being an ďapothecaristĒ (as I like to describe myself), I love to hike, cook (especially bake!), travel, read, knit (though I canít seem to go beyond scarves!), spoil my niece and nephew, and of course spend time with my two bully boys.
Iím lucky to be living close by to some great hiking trails, and many times Iíll take Tate and Finn along on a hike. I love watching them meander up and down trails, experiencing different types of terrain. Their bulldog determination and curiosity makes them terrific hiking companions, despite their bully reputation of being more on the sedate side. No, not these two, especially when theyíre put on a trail!
One of the biggest gifts I gave myself a few years ago was a trip to Nepal. There, I hiked up to, and beyond the Everest Base Camp. I reached over 18,000 feet, and literally felt on top of the world! It was a trip of a lifetime for me, and is something I will never forget.
These days, I stay pretty close to home, mainly because I have two little guys who rule my world. I say that in the most positive and loving way. If you had told me a year ago that I would be a mommy to two such energetic bulldogs, I would have laughed at you and given you a sarcastic roll of the eyes! Last year, I was in no way ready to care for a dog, much less two of them.
I had a sudden breakup with my boyfriend of 4 years and I was still grieving the loss of both my mom and dad who died several years ago. All this caused me to fall into a deep depression. I was hospitalized four different times in 2010, and honestly, wasnít sure if Iíd get through it. Somehow though, with lots of help, support, and love from my family, I did. By the beginning of 2011, I was actively searching for my English bulldog puppy. Ever since I was a little kid, Iíve dreamed of owning an EB, and I wanted to finally make that dream come true. Little did I know that I would ultimately get not just one, but two of these precious creatures.
I have to say that God has been good to me. He helped me make it through some very dark moments. Thereís so much laughter in my life now, and when people see me, they see a different person from one year ago. They ask me what Iím doing now that makes me feel so happy and so alive. All I have to do is say three words to give them the answer, Tate and Finn.
Thank you, EBN family, for letting me share a little bit about my life with you. You guys are truly the best!
