Gene and his proud papa, Edwin
Hello everyone my name is Edwin, or Ed for short. I am 19 years old and go to school full time pursuing a masters degree in both civil engineering and architecture, and still work full time on top of that. I love cars and I also love music of all kinds, in high school I was very involved in the music programs. I played saxophone for jazz band and tuba for concert and marching band. In 2008 I auditioned and was fortunate enough to make it into the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps from DCI. As a kid I loved dogs and my family always had pitbulls around.
Now my love for bullies started in 2007 when a beautiful stray female bulldog about 4 years old came and laid in our driveway. My parents did not want to go near it in fear it was aggressive, but I went outside immediately. As I approached her, she gave me the most beautiful bully eyes I have ever seen and flipped on her back so I could rub her belly. Immediately I fell in love with her. We tried to find her owners for a while. She did not have a microchip, collar or anything to identify her. So after looking for a while my parents said we could keep her. I will never forgive myself for this but we knew absolutely nothing about the breed, now that I look back I would have given her to someone that would have been able to actually care for her.
However, we still spoiled her rotten in any way we could, she was always very defensive of me and kept me company all the time so I named her " Princess". In the summer of 2008, when I came back from tour, my parents told me that they had left for about a day and she chocked herself to death. I was devastated and promised myself I would one day get another bully. Last august I wanted to get myself something really special for my birthday, and decided that I was ready to take the responsibility of a bulldog. I found an ad in the newspaper and replied, and when I saw Gene I immediately fell in love with him.
At 6 months old Gene is the best bully I could have asked for, no dog will ever replace Princess, but he has brought back many memories that I had with her. He is spoiled as well and gets away with almost anything. He has inspired me to become more active in the bulldog community, and one day I would like to start a bulldog rescue in honor of my girl Princess.
Seeing how it's so rare to see a bulldog here I decided to take initiative and try to get a local Bulldog group together so Gene could have friends he would get along with. I posted an ad on craigslist saying that I wanted to start a bully group, and surprisingly I got a good amount of replies.
On our first meet there was about 15 dogs total with 9 english bulldogs, 2 olde English bulldogges, 3 bullteriers, and a presa canario. It was great to see all the owners making new friends and the bully's running around playing with each other. After posting for a second time with pictures from our first meet, my email inbox now has a lot more replies and it seems like the group is growing every week. This truly is a fun experience for everyone involved because there is nothing better than all those bulldogs running around, slobbering, and playing. Not only is it fun for the bulldogs but us owners really have a good time talking to each other and making new friends. I am proud to say that this seems to be the beginning of what I want to call the "El Paso Bulldog Club".
I want to thank you all for being such nice caring people and giving me a chance to share a little about me with you, because since the day I joined this forum, I got a warm welcome and nothing but great advice.
